There wouldn’t be a reader of this article who hasn’t had a few drinks at a bar or nightclub. Likewise, there probably isn’t a reader of this article who knows exactly what alcohol does to them. So in an effort to educate the bar and nightclub enthusiast fraternity, we decided to summarise what different blood alcohol levels do to you. (Please note that the effects of alcohol depend on the level of alcohol in the blood stream, which depend on the period of time over which you have been drinking. Accordingly this is just a rough guide…)
2 to 4 drinks: Drinking this much generally gives people a distinct sense of well-being and relaxation. The principal area of the brain affected during at this stage is the cerebral cortex, thereby reducing inhibitions. At this stage, the alertness of the individual is impaired. Most bar and nightclub enthusiasts will also know that this stage of the night is fun but short-lived, as the night is generally only beginning.
5 to 8 drinks: This is the stage of the night is where the fun starts happening, characterised by a sense of pleasure, numbness and emotional arousal. For some, this stage is also characterised by nausea, which, is extremely funny for everyone else. In addition to the cerebral cortex, the forebrain is also affected, thereby also impairing fine motor skills. (Driving is not a fine motor skill, but is definitely also impaired)
9 to 12 drinks: This is where the positive effects of alcohol finish, and bar and nightclub enthusiasts can turn into complete wankers. Most people have experienced friends in this state, and will be familiar with mood swings, anger, depression and just carrying on. At this point, alcohol effects the cerebellum, which results in the drinker engaging in highly inappropriate behaviour.
13 to 16 drinks: The subject can become aggressive, despondent and just all round crazy. At this point the whole brain is affected.
17 to 20 drinks: Coma
20+ drinks: You just might die.
